Market closing : After consolidation, the Nifty settled at record closing high on expiry day Thursday, backed by banking & financials on hopes of NPA resolution.
The 50-share NSE Nifty closed up 29.95 points at 9,173.75 while the 30-share BSE Sensex gained 115.99 points at 29,647.42.
The broader markets also traded in line with benchmarks. About 1731 shares advanced against 987 declining shares on the BSE.
HDFC Bank rallied more than 2 percent and Adani Ports extended gains in late trade, up 6.5 percent.
Indices traded in the green, but trimmed some of the morning gains ahead of expiry of March F&O series later in the day. Top gainers continued to be SBI, Adani Ports and Aurobindo Pharma, while Coal India and Axis Bank were the top losers.
